| Description | Egypt disposes on 950 registered quarries involving reserves worth - as is - about L.E. 40 billion (i.e. before processing). They are mainly located in Asswan (169), Red Sea (160), Giza (152), Sinai (82), Assuit (60), Cairo (54), Qena (49), Beheira (45), Sohag (55) & Beni Swef (42). They are the responsibility of the General Authority for General Survey & Mining. Its Chairman, Eng. Abul Hassan Abdel Raouf, stressed that the quarrying value could be doubled if we get quarries owners to use modern techniques & technologies. He gave an example with the price of sand, $ 23 per ton, yet if kaolin is separated from sand at $ 36 per ton cost, the price of kaolin increases to $ 90 per ton & that of sand to $40. The same applies to marble, which makes L.E. 650 profits per one m3 if exported in blocks, yet it could make profits of L.E.3, 200 per 1 m3 if professionally cut & polished. |
